British soccer fan throws punches during on-field brawl while holding a small child – Washington Post

Things got a little chippy during Thursday’s Europa League group-stage match between English club Everton and French side Lyon in Liverpool. In the 64th minute, Everton captain Ashley Williams appeared to shove Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes into the sideline advertisement boards as he retrieved the ball from the corner. The usual pushing and shoving commenced along the edge of the field, close enough for the fans to get a good view.

Or, you know, get in a few licks of their own . . . while holding what appears to be either a toddler or a very short adult.

The man has not been publicly identified, but Everton said Friday that he has been banned from future games at Goodison Park.

“Club officials have reviewed the footage of an incident where supporters towards the front of the lower Gwladys Street End became involved in a confrontation between players,” the team said in a statement. “We have identified one individual against whom action will now be taken. This will include a ban from attending future Everton fixtures, and the club registering a formal complaint with Merseyside Police.”

Merseyside Police released a statement of their own saying they are investigating the incident.

UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, has charged Everton with “aggressions by supporters against players” and will hold a disciplinary hearing on Nov. 16, according to the BBC. Last month, Everton and Croatian club Hajduk Split both were fined by UEFA because of crowd unrest during their Europa League playoff at Goodison Park.
